How often to water potted succulents when it’s hot out?

For those that live in areas that get very hot, how often do you water your potted succulents when it’s hot out? Most of mine are in concrete or similar type planters, although a couple are in large plastic ones. I am nervous to over water, but also don’t want them to get too dry. I’ve also tried to keep them all in minimal direct sun. I had to move a few due to a party at our house, for just one day and only a few feet over, and they all got burned! I couldn’t believe the difference a slight move made and a few extra hours of sun. Anyway, just trying to see what the norm is for watering in pots. The soil does seem dry most of the time.

Cacti depending on the species can take long periods of dry conditions . If you are looking for an ideal watering schedule a timetable may not serve your plants very well . All cacti and succulents like to dry out completely and then be watered thoroughly . For plants in portable pots, a large container that can hold water to a minimum depth of halfway up the pot (to be watered) Let the plant set in the container until the surface of the soil is evenly moist . For plants in less or non portable containers a wooden dowel is a good way to check the moisture level in the soil . If the dowel comes out dry after you have inserted it to the bottom of the pot then it is time to water . A drip system is best . A hose or nozzle set at a trickle will work but you still need to probe to determine if your plant has been thoroughly watered.

Plants in pots dry out quicker.

I have cacti which I only water once weekly no matter how hot. Some succulents get watered more often, though never more than 2-3 times a week. Some can't take the intense full afternoon summer sun . Watch your plants and let them teach you.

That's extremely often for cacti and succulents. I'm not sure...

Judy, I agree. there are some I can water daily and some I never water. It just depends. There are too many variables..medium..humidity...pot size...species...etc
