With adequate well drained soil mix, any material will work, even plastic. Stop the non-sense that the walls must "breathe". It´s the substrate aeration that´s important. I was just intrigued by the info that it's so good for the roots! Very interesting. Might get small one and try tradescantia or spider plant in it and see how they like it.
